20150523_103858Folks looking for potted herbs, perennials, shrubbery, annuals, and advice on growing plants, flocked to the Horticultural Society’s plant sale. Master Gardener Suzanne Hanna and team SSMHS shared advice and guidance on growing tips, watering instructions, and expertise for creating and sustaining a successful garden in our northern geography.20150523_102726

Mother Nature reminded us today, that some plants are not happy, in chilly weather. Even under several layers of protective covering, the beautiful Basil plants were affected by temperatures which dipped into the frosty side.

SSMHS gave out free packets of Common Milkweed seeds (Asclepias syriaca). Milkweeds are an important food source for butterflies, bees, wasps, and other nectar-seeking insects. These remarkable plants are a larval food source for monarch butterflies and their relatives. The genus, or origins of Milkweed, Asclepius, is named after the Greek god of healing, because of the many folk-medicinal uses for the milkweed plants.

Halina Peltonen brought Arts on Wheels to the Plant Sale at Allard St. Community Garden site. Young people were encouraged to decorate a plant container, fill it with nutrient rich soil, and plant a flower. The young people revelled in the experience to be sure. Halina was kept busy for the duration of the Plant Sale.

The Allard Street Community Garden is entering it’s 12th year of existence. There        are 68 plots (beds), at a marginal cost of $20.00 each. It is estimated that over                  120 people during the course of a growing season would be involved in the                             care and maintenance of individual plots.
